MOUNTAIN ALI UNDERGROUND CITY
The Ali Mountain Cistern underground city was built during the reign of St. Basilious of the Kingdom of Cappadocia, in the 3rd century AD, as a place to hide from Eastern Roman Pagan persecution and to worship. The underground city, which was opened to visitors in 2010, is approximately 300 meters long and features a water cistern, birdhouse, sirehane, place of worship, hall, and various other sections. Despite its narrow corridors, the underground city offers good air flow and a cool atmosphere.
